Q: I feel my English teacher doesn't have the skills or time to help me to improve my English. What should I do?
A: It’s important not to rely on just one teacher. Some other things you can do to improve your English include:

  • Find a study buddy or an additional tutor: You can find people online who also want to practice. E.g. https://www.englisch-hilfen.de/en, https://www.immerseenglish.com, https://onlinewritingtraining.com.au
  • Supplement your learning with other resources and apps. E.g. https://www.innovativelanguage.com
  • Listen to podcasts and radio in English to get a feel for the language. E.g. https://tunein.com/radio/talk
  • Practice, practice, practice! One of the best ways to do this is to use flashcards. E.g. https://apps.ankiweb.net
  • If all else fails with your teacher, get a new one.

Q: I have lost my motivation in learning English. What should I do?
A: Motivation is an essential personal development behaviour you’ll need to cultivate. Reminding yourself why you are studying will only take you so far. Some tips to get motivated include:

  • Studying with someone so you motivate each other. See resources above to find a study buddy
  • Using apps to hold you responsible for not studying. One I particularly like puts money on the line if you procrastinate: https://www.stickk.com
  • Read a fantastic book with actionable tips like: The Motivation Myth, https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/The-Motivation-Myth-Audiobook
  • Go on a training course to help build your motivational skills. There are lots online.

Q: I’ve noticed lots of weaknesses in our English course curriculum design. Why does this happen?
A: Sadly, it happens. There are good, bad and mediocre courses out there. To avoid this, before choosing a course:

  • Get testimonials
  • Speak to others who have been on the program
  • Ask if you can sit in on a free session and check them out
  • If you have already started the course and it’s not for you, then leave.

Q: I have a good grasp of the English grammar rules and reading, how can I improve my writing and speaking skills?
A: Practice and learn by doing. See the resources in Question 1.

Q: How can I improve my English skills outside of the school program?
A:  Practice. See the resources in Question 1.

Q: I’ve noticed a deficiency of relevant and flexible Maritime English programs. Why does this happen?
A: Maritime English is a specialised topic, which means that training is usually found in academic institutions in shipping hubs. The plus side to this is because there aren't that many, it makes it easier to find the right one for you.
