What is Maritime English?

Like other languages, English will change depending on context. For instance, from day-to-day English to more formal, academic language.

Maritime English refers to English as it is used in the shipping sector.

Also known as Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP), Ana Bocanegra-Valle, in the Encyclopaedia of Applied Linguistics, defines Maritime English as:

"An umbrella term which refers to the English language used by seafarers, both at sea, in port and by individuals working in the shipping and shipbuilding industry. Maritime English lies in the workplace's domain."

So, whether you’re:

  • Navigating at sea
  • Shipbuilding
  • Involved in litigation
  • Insuring ships and cargo
  • Training seafarers

English has become the primary language in the shipping industry.

Why is English the Language of the Sea?

Historically, each nation used its own language to conduct international business. As trade between nations grew, so did problems in communication. With a significant impact on safety and profitability, a common language became essential.

As Great Britain dominated seaborne trade, Maritime English evolved to fill that role.
