Maritime Law

WELCOME TO ADDITIONAL RESOURCES FOR MARITIME LAW.
In this section, we’ll outline some of the most important features of maritime law.

What is maritime law, also known as admiralty law or shipping law?

In The General Maritime Law - The Lex Maritima, the distinguished Prof. William Tetley pointed out that maritime law “... is composed of the maritime customs, codes, conventions and practices from earliest times to the present, which have had no international boundaries and which exist in any particular jurisdiction unless limited or excluded by a particular statute.”

There is no precise distinction between maritime law, admiralty law and shipping law.

Prof. Tetley further clarified in International Maritime and Admiralty Law that:

“This is because they have evolved separately in various countries of the world at various times, so that today, neither is truly a term of art, distinct from the other.
…they have been fused together into a virtually single body of law, by the passage of time, and particularly because so many shipping conventions are international.”

Maritime law is the body of laws that provides the legitimate framework for all affairs at sea. They’re vital to ensuring workplaces are safe and trade conforms to all legal considerations.

Maritime law focuses on all national and international aspects of trade at sea, including:

  • Private and public maritime law
  • Basic contracts of maritime transportation
  • Marine insurance
  • Various nations’ regulations
  • International maritime conventions
